Sleep Imprints

Graphite on paper
2008

Sleep imprints is a drawing series made by spending nights sleeping on specially prepared sheets of bed sized paper and graphite powder. Placed under my sheets for a night, the transient wrinkles and marks of a night of sleep are permanently imprinted on paper.

In 2009 the Sleep Imprints project had an opportunity for collaboration. New sleep drawings were made in collaboration with French artist Sebastien Plout for DIALOGUES, a collaboration between fifteen pairs of French and U.S. based artists, with corresponding shows in each country.  We both spent the night in our respective countries, sleeping on sheets of paper that the other person had already slept on. Having never met before, the artists share a night of intimacy displayed in the intermingling marks of each others sleep.
